Shirley's Barista Bio

Shirley became a barista at Shimoji Coffee just a few weeks after we opened in Autumn of 2016! She had experience with customer service and baking, along with a love for coffee, and she wanted to be a part of Shimoji. Shirley loves that Shimoji Coffee gives customers and baristas the opportunity to interact face to face, rather than through an intercom. She explained, “We can make their orders more personal, to fit their personal taste. It’s good to see their faces and get to know them!” Shirley also appreciates that everything at Shimoji is fresh, and can be custom made.

Experimenting with coffee, tea, and everything in between is one of Shirley’s hobbies, but the Spiced Chai Latte at Shimoji is definitely her favorite tea, because she loves the spices! When our Chai Latte is ordered as “spiced,” we add a touch of cinnamon and chili powder to the steamed milk to give it a little extra kick, and sweeten it with vanilla syrup. The Classic Latte is Shirley’s other favorite drink. She prefers hot drinks because they’re creamy and filling. The Blueberry Muffin is Shirley’s favorite baked good.

Shirley is married and has two sons. She greatly values family time and considers herself to be a goat mom, too! She enjoys spending her free time studying medieval cooking and bread baking, attending and singing at Northside Christian Church, and hanging out with her friends. Her favorite way to start the day is to brew a fresh pot of coffee. She gets so excited to open at Shimoji and have the first espresso shot of the day. “When I get that first sip, I want to do a happy dance,” she said with a smile on her face.
